Hi Ginger Colleen, your comment sounds very encouraging! I’m trying to regrow my enamel as well and am planning to make my own toothpaste to avoid glycerin in the commercial ones. Did you use this recipe or another one? Did you have to consult with your dentist before using it? Thanks!

Hi Delphine, You can read all about the benefits of xylitol and how it works in this post.

I read that xylitol protects teeth by making them slippery so that bacteria cannot collect… But if this is the case, wouldn’t it prevent mineral absorption as well? I wonder if perhaps it might be best to make a xylitol rinse after brushing to allow minerals to absorb beforehand? Then again, how long does it take for minerals to get absorbed? Thank you so much for your great recipes!

In theory, that should work. Please let us know how it goes if you try it!

The clay will draw toxins out of the plastic (a petrochemical product). Store your toothpaste in a glass jar.

Any reason you couldnt use fractionated coconut oil instead of water and regular coconut oil? Would keep it squeezable and prevent spoilage.

Also I replaced the coconut oil with MCT oil that is always runny – so I didn’t have to worry about it sticking to pipe drains….and it worked great! I may cut back just a little since it made it quite runny….

Nina,

I’ve been using the same batch since June 8th but I used colloidal silver instead of water (it’s pretty much like water) and it hasn’t gone bad…. yet

I keep it in an air tight container so haven’t had this issue…

Hi Katie, I love the toothpaste, but it goes bad easily with moisture. Is it possible to add a preservative to it? If so, which one would you recommend. Thanks

I have calcium bentonite clay for facials already…but it says external use only. I’ve learned that’s not always the case with things…would it be safe to use in this?

What about using colloidal silver instead of water? That would certainly preserve it really well!

You can omit it or use calcium powder instead. It helps with the texture but can be left out if you’re not comfortable using it.

Yes, clay will harden up and stop up the drain. It’s basically dirt and will pack itself in the pipes over time. I would either consult a plumber on how to prevent it, or run more water in there, make sure to clean out the drain every few weeks or so.

I want to do this, but I cannot get over the idea of clay… like dirt… in the toothpaste.

For our daughter, due to her special needs, we need a safe to swallow toothpaste.

We bought the Redmond Earthpaste. Otherwise we were considering the spry gel toothpaste. We have also made a homemade one with coconut oil, baking soda and peppermint oil.

Would you consider this recipe a safe to swallow recipe?
