I am doing it agin now. Detoxing from sugar is the only thing that clears up my skin. I’ve had little bumps on my arms since I was a young kid and nothing worked from dermatologists. Taking sugar out of my diet is the only thing that has worked! Mental clarity increases, energy increases. Everyone should do a sugar detox at least for a time. Sugar is in everything! You have to be so careful at the store and read labels carefully! It can seem like a chore at first, but it gets easier.

It felt amazing – it cured this low level of anxiety and anger that I didn’t even realise was there until it was gone (I doubt anyone notices it until they’re off sugar and grains). I’ve only managed it 3 times because I’m so addicted. I always thought I could handle a little sugar, but a little turns into a lot within a few weeks, and then it’s months/years before I manage to commit to another sugar-free period. The first try I did cold turkey; I just ate meat, dairy, and vegetables (not even fruit). The second time was part of a Whole30 and I ate a lot of berries (and cheated a bit with dried fruit and smoothies at first) until the cravings went away after 3 weeks (in the end, the only craving I had left was for white potatoes! I think the Whole30 allows these now – haven’t looked up why). The third time I eliminated only sugar and wheat, so I just ate anything else to get me through it. That also worked. I find that I have to eat some kind of substitute (bacon, burgers, berries, cheese, whatever) to get me through the initial cravings. I don’t worry about quantities of anything, I just have to stuff my face for a bit to get past the cravings. Of course, the next challenge is to not believe myself when I say I can have just a little!

I read somewhere that when you think you’re craving sugar your body is actually craving salt. Also, butter mints (butter with peppermint extract) can help minimize cravings.

Janet, what brand of probiotic did you use?

It sort of makes sense that candida begs to be fed, so if we overpower it with good bacteria it won’t be so hangry.

I have been doing the Keto diet for several months now, and it has really helped my blood sugar numbers on a daily basis. One thing I discovered in doing this diet and reading up on it: your BODY makes SUGAR out of lots of things on its own! Like too much protein: it will turn it into sugar! Of course carbs, but even the foods that are low in carbs will turn into sugar if you eat too much of it. (Like cauliflower and broccoli).
So if you are trying to eliminate sugar from your diet, be careful you don’t consume too much protein, or your body will just make its own!
The Keto diet focuses on Fats, making up 70% of the foods you eat, 20% protein and 5% carbs. I did have a bit of a sugar detox effect, and I really wasn’t eating lots of sugar! I don’t replace sugar with substitutes except for a “fat bomb” recipe I do add some ‘swerve’ to it. (erythritol with some kind of fermented something…lol. not very scientific description, is it?). I do feel better off the sugar, and think that I’ll stay off any added sugar pretty much for life. At some point, I MAY add in some of the foods I miss, like fruit, and some of the root veggies that are banned like carrots and beets. (Too many carbs, and too naturally high in sugar!).

A few things I have found helpful when I’m craving sugar. Chew gum (unsweetened). Eat a pickle. Who wants sugar when you’ve just eaten a pickle? I love Dr. Pepper – probably my weakest point. I’ve gotten to where I drink La Croix and if I need more flavor add juice to it. Anyone else have some tricks up their sleeves?

Without reading much about it we pretty much did all the things you recommend. It was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made!

Had a bit of soup, later tried a piece of chocolate, tasted way to sweet. After a water fast of 5 days or more your taste buds become far more sensitive and you just can’t handle sweet things. Generally I don’t have a problem with taking organic raw cane sugar as I used it in Kefir & Kombucha.

We Americans consume far too much sugar. I’ve cut my sugar intake dramatically and feel fantastic!
I found out at a physical several that my liver enzymes were off. The culprit was sugar!!! When I realized this I took drastic action and the results were great. Normal labs, more energy.
I noticed that this happens to me: The more sugar I take in the more I want. And conversely the less I take in the less I crave.
Thanks for posting this article!!
